Google says my business is closed: what to do

«Permanently closed» on your listing costs you customers every day. Why it happens and how to fix it.

·3 min read·Leer en español

If your listing says «Temporarily closed» or «Permanently closed», hardly anyone calls: they move on to the next business. It can be fixed, but do it quickly.

Why it happens

  • Someone suggested you were closed and Google accepted it.
  • You marked the business closed for a holiday and never changed it back.
  • The listing is not verified or nobody checks it, so Google accepts other people's suggestions.
  • You moved and the old listing is still live.

How to mark it open again

  • Sign in to your Business Profile with the account that manages it.
  • Go to «Edit profile», then «Hours».
  • Choose «Open with main hours» and check the hours are right.
  • Look for pending Google updates and reject any that are wrong.

Stop it happening again

  • Use special hours for holidays instead of «Temporarily closed».
  • Check the listing every few weeks: Google shows suggested changes there.
  • Post now and then and reply to reviews: an active listing gets fewer outside edits.

Common questions

I do not have access to the listing. What now?

Find your business on Google Maps and tap «Own this business?». Google will guide you through getting access.

How long until it shows as open?

Usually a few days, because Google reviews the change before publishing it.
